In l986, the citizens of Grosse Pointe Woods passed a Recreation Bond Proposal that included funds for a Community Center. In l989, construction started and in January l99l, the Community Center was opened. The Center is located at 20025 Mack Plaza, adjoining City Hall. The Community Center is available for the cultural, educational, recreational and social activities of the residents of Grosse Pointe Woods. Programs and services are for all residents, regardless of varying mental and physical abilities. Please call for assistance in accessing recreational services.
The Community Center also is responsible for the annual City Calendar, quarterly city newsletter – Update, and cable TV announcements.
Three rooms are available for rent by residents, with enough space for an intimate gathering of 24 or less, or a grander party for up to 125 guests. Beautiful landscaping outside the Community Center enhances the sunny atmosphere, with cozy fireplaces adding to the homelike feeling.
A variety of leisure-time activities take place at the Community Center. They are publicized quarterly in the Update which is delivered to all residents during the months of February, May, August and November.
Entry to the city parks is by permit only. Applications are mailed to residents in April, using the water billing mailing list. Passes can be validated for each resident, six years and older. New residents must show proof of residency. New residents include residents who have moved to another Grosse Pointe Woods address, anyone newly added to the list and any non-head of household 21 years or older. Please read the instructions on the front of the park pass application. Each resident, six years of age and older must have a validated pass to gain entry to parks, which is good from May l to April 30.
Lost, stolen or mislaid permits may be replaced for a fee of $1 for each permit, limited to one duplicate per person per calendar year. Duplicate permits do not include guest privileges, except with City Council approval.
Park pass holders, if entitled to guest privileges, are allowed one guest (not punched) per weekday only. Two park passes per household have 14 summer guest punches; additional park passes issued to other members of a household have eight summer guest punches. There is no limit to the number of summer punches per day. A park pass holder is able to use winter guest punches beginning November 1, when winter hours are in effect. Each park pass issued has 20 winter punches, which may be used according to the following guidelines: Only one winter punch may be used per day, each punch allows three guests (this includes the “free” guest).
These passes are issued for out-of-town guests, coming 100 miles or more, and staying for an extended period of time.
This permit costs $5. It is issued to a household and may be used by any non-resident caregiver. It may be used only when accompanied by the resident or child requiring caregiver services.
Reservations for Ghesquiere Park’s four tennis courts may be made only on the day you will be playing. This may be done in person at the Community Center during office hours and at the Public Safety dispatch desk at all other times. You must show a current park pass. Batting cage reservations use the same procedure. The pitching machine is not available for public use.
Residents may reserve the gazebo for their personal use for small weddings, photo sessions, etc., by calling 343-2408.
Grosse Pointe Woods Residents and their guests of all ages are welcome to sign up for our discounted group trips. Trips take place once a month, and are published in the Update. Please see the chart for information on day trips. If possible sign up early to ensure a spot on the trip. Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before the start time of the trip in order to check in with the tour escort inside the Community Center and receive a nametag. Please contact the Community Center with any questions regarding day trips.
The City of Grosse Pointe Woods provides additional activities for seniors. The senior program is continuously growing and expanding to make a distinctive impact in the lives of seniors in our community.
