The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the following:

  • Local and major streets
  • Forestry
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Recycling
  • Parking maintenance
  • Solid Waste
  • Leaf Disposal
  • Water/sewers

The department is also responsible for maintaining all city buildings, grounds, and providing its expertise throughout the 53.95 miles of city streets and 3.28 square miles of land. Total manpower consists of 26 full-time employees, 7 part-time, 12 seasonal/temporary.

The Department of Public Works handles all street construction projects. City employees inspect driveway approaches and sidewalks. They also handle care of grass, flowers and sprinkling systems.

The department operates on an eight-year rotating schedule for maintenance and capital improvements. Areas covered include water system repairs, tree trimming, replacement of street signs, concrete sidewalks and miscellaneous street repairs, asphalt street resurfacing or chip and seal maintenance, maintenance of the sewer system and fire hydrants. The maintenance schedule is published in the summer issue of the Update.

Approved Construction Projects for 2018/2019

Below is the list of approved construction projects:

  • Miscellaneous Concrete Pavement Repairs throughout the city
  • Joint Sealing in District 6 (Mack to Fairway from Vernier to Torrey) and throughout city as needed.
  • 2018 Road Program – resurfacing of Anita (Mack to west city limit), resurfacing of Brys (Mack to Helen), resurfacing of Lochmoor (Sunningdale Park to Fairway), reconstruction of Stanhope (Chester to west city limit), and joint repair of Cook Road (Mack to Wedgewood)
  • 2018 Water Main Capital Improvement Program –replacement of water main on Fairholme Road (Mack to Fairford), including the cut-de-sacs to the south (Marford Ct., Baltree Ct., Ghesquiere Ct., and Berns Ct.)

Wood Chips and Compost

Wood chips and compost are available to residents free of charge at the DPW yard, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Residents must supply their own shovel and container.
