The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the following:

  • Local and major streets
  • Forestry
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Recycling
  • Parking maintenance
  • Solid Waste
  • Leaf Disposal
  • Water/sewers

The department is also responsible for maintaining all city buildings, grounds, and providing its expertise throughout the 53.95 miles of city streets and 3.28 square miles of land. Total manpower consists of 23 full-time employees, 3 part-time, 6 seasonal/temporary.

The Department of Public Works handles all street construction projects. City employees inspect driveway approaches and sidewalks. They also handle care of grass, flowers and sprinkling systems.

The department operates on an eight-year rotating schedule for maintenance and capital improvements. Areas covered include water system repairs, tree trimming, replacement of street signs, concrete sidewalks and miscellaneous street repairs, asphalt street resurfacing or chip and seal maintenance, maintenance of the sewer system and fire hydrants. The rotating schedule is published in the summer issue of the Update.


Vehicle Maintenance

This area is responsible for preventive maintenance and daily repairs on some 175 vehicles and pieces of equipment, including, autos, buses, trucks, lawn mowers, street cleaning and other specialized equipment.


Sidewalk and Driveway Approach Replacement

As part of an eight-year rotating schedule the city makes sidewalk and driveway approach repairs in one of eight city districts each year.  For the 2011 construction period, the program has been delayed/postponed.  When inspections resume we will be working in District 4 (City Hall to the north city limits - west of Mack).

Below is the list of approved construction projects:

  • Joint Sealing in District 4 (west of Mack between City Hall and north city limits)
  • Miscellaneous water/sewer concrete repairs throughout the city

Wood Chips and Compost

Wood chips and compost are available to residents free of charge at the DPW yard, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Residents must supply their own shovel and container.
