This division is responsible for the maintenance of trees, shrubs, flowers and grass throughout the City and parks. It is responsible for cutting 75 acres of grass weekly, as well as condemnation of diseased trees. All city ash trees are being monitored for signs of emerald ash borer infestation. Ash trees are being removed and replaced as they become diseased. Call 343-2460 for a list of licensed trimming and removal contractors.
The Forestry Division works closely with the Beautification and Tree Commissions to coordinate reforestation and landscape projects. In 1979 the City implemented a reforestation plan using only acceptable trees for street plantings financed with tax money. Residents who may want to plant these same trees on private property may obtain a complete list of acceptable trees with information on color, branching, height, etc., by calling 343-2460.
Trees are trimmed every eight years according to the district maintenance schedule. Our tree trimmers have been trained to trim properly to eliminate storm damage and traffic hazards, to prevent disease and give the proper clearance over sidewalks and street. Upon the advice of authorities, we do not use tree paint, which some research indicates slows the rate of wound healing.
Subject to availability, wood chips and compost are offered free to residents at the Public Works yard, at the corner of Marter Road and Parkway, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Bring your own shovel and container.
