Public Safety Notices

Victim Notification Program

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), is committed to protecting the public and ensuring that the rights of victims are carefully observed. HSI administers the Victim Notification Program which allows eligible victims and witnesses to obtain reliable and timely information regarding a criminal alien's release from custody. However, victims and witnesses are required to register with our agency in order to receive notification of a criminal alien's release. The following link will direct you to a number of valuable victim services programs provided by ICE.

"Safe Zone" for Craigslist or other like transactions

A new program offers the Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety department lobby as a “safe zone” for Craigslist or other such transactions.

If you are contemplating engaging in a Craigslist-type exchange, consider making the transaction in the Grosse Pointe Woods Public Safety department. If someone does not want to meet in the city parking lot or the Public Safety lobby, this should raise a "red flag." If an individual does not agree to meet in this safe zone, do not engage further. Anyone who would balk at meeting there should make you wary.

The Public Safety lobby is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are video cameras in the lobby and facing the sidewalk. Upon arrival, notify the dispatcher or officer behind the counter that you are here to conduct a transaction. Residents do not need to call in advance. Officers will not serve as witnesses or in any other way take part in the transactions unless something gives rise to their involvement.

Being proactive and implementing a safe zone for such transactions allows our residents the opportunity to meet in a safe environment. Nationwide, many Craigslist scams have resulted in robberies, assault and even homicides. Locally, officers have responded to complaints and taken reports of people being scammed out of property and money through purported legitimate Craigslist transactions.

Alarm Ordinance and Application

Effective January 1, 2012, all residents and business owners are required to register their alarm systems with the City. The registration fee is $60 and is valid until December 31, 2014. The purpose of registering alarms is to provide the Department of Public Safety (DPS) with the necessary information of whom to contact in the event of an emergency.  Additionally, it authorizes DPS to contact alarm companies directly when a malfunction or problem occurs with a system.

Dispatch/Lock-up Collaboration Effort

The five Grosse Pointe communities have been considering substantial changes to their emergency dispatch operations. The goal of this consideration is two-fold:

1. Maintain or improve current level of service, and

2. Reduce costs

To that end, two major options have been explored. A Subcommittee made up of the 5 city managers, the 5 public safety directors, and a SEMCOG representative was given by the Ad Hoc Grosse Pointe Public Safety Committee comprised of elected officials and the administrators of each Grosse Pointe municipality, the task to explore these options and make recommendations. Their recommendations and rationale for those recommendations is the subject of this report.

Early Warning Sirens

The City received an emergency management grant through Wayne County to install additional early warning sirens throughout the Grosse Pointes. These sirens are activated to warn our communities of weather emergencies, such as severe storms or tornadoes. The siren will be activated on the first Saturday of each month for testing purposes. Each test will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. and will last approximately one minute.

Peddlers, Vendors, Solicitors

Approaching warm weather brings folks wanting to speak to you regarding their wares and services. Keeping your safety in mind, the City requires any person wishing to engage in the business of peddling, vending, or soliciting to first obtain a license. An applicant must fill out an application, pay a fee, pass a background check, and obtain the approval of the City Council in accordance with Section 10-220 of the City Code.

Licenses issued to vendors or peddlers, such as refuse vendors, ice cream trucks, or fruit and vegetable sales, are issued in the form of a sticker, which must be displayed in a conspicuous place on the vehicle. A licensee without a vehicle must display proof when asked. Licensees may vend or peddle from 9:00 a.m. to dusk or 7:00 p.m., whichever occurs first.

No Handbills

Grosse Pointe Woods’ City Code also provides for a prohibition on soliciting or placement of handbills. Section 14-2 of the City’s Code, Prohibited where posted, and Section 10-295. Delivery to posted property, prohibit a person from soliciting and delivering or depositing residential handbills at a residence or other building where a sign indicating No Solicitors and/or No Handbills is displayed in a conspicuous location.

The signage cannot exceed three inches by twelve inches with letters one inch or greater in size. Signs are available in the form of a window cling or a door knob hanger at City Hall for $1.00 each.

Contact the Department of Public Safety at 313 343-2410 as soon as possible when the validity of a roving peddler, vendor, or solicitor is in question.
