Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween Safety Tips
  • Suggested hours for trick-or-treating in Grosse Pointe Woods are 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Trick-or-Treaters in wheelchairs, strollers, or with autism face unique challenges: is there a clear pathway to your easy-to-reach candy bowl?
  • Children under 12 years of age should be accompanied by a parent or adult.
  • Trick-or-Treaters should only visit homes with porch or outside lights illuminated; children should never enter a stranger's home or car.
  • Have children carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  • Teach your children to never eat treats until they return home and you can check their candy. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is advising the public of an alarming, emerging trend of colorful, rainbow-colored fentanyl packaged like pills that look like candy. Visit www.DEA.gov for details.
  • Avoid distraction - such as cell phones - when crossing streets; use designated crosswalks; ans walk, don't run, across the street.

For Motorists

  • Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween.
  • Drive slowly and anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic. Watch for children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs.
